Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe

Mother to Uganda's Children

Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe is a Catholic nun from Uganda who has dedicated her life to helping women and girls affected by the brutal civil war in her country. At the helm of the Saint Monica Girls’ Tailoring Centre in Gulu, she provides a safe haven for those who were abducted and forced to become child soldiers and sex slaves by the Lord's Resistance Army.

Through a simple yet profound program, Sister Rosemary teaches these young women skills like tailoring and cooking. More than just providing vocational training, she offers them a path to healing and a chance to reclaim their dignity and independence. Many of the women she helps have children as a result of their abductions, and the center also offers daycare so they can attend classes.

Her unwavering compassion and fierce dedication have earned her international recognition, including being named one of the 2007 CNN Heroes. Sister Rosemary's work is a powerful testament to the idea that love and a simple act of teaching a skill can mend broken lives and build a brighter future, one stitch at a time.
